Vietnam and the Art of Memory in Motion
Vietnam possesses a long-standing and complex History that has shaped a culture deeply rooted in collective memory, resilience, and the continuity of tradition. Its cultural landscape encompasses ritual practices, musical forms, and folk arts that function as conveyers of historical knowledge and social values.
A central role within this cultural expressions is played by puppetry, with the traditional Water Puppet Theatre standing as its most distinctive form. Developed in the rural communities of the Red River Delta, this theatrical form narrates myths, historical events, and aspects of everyday life. Through the integrated use of movement, music, and visual artistry, the puppets serve as both pedagogical and narrative instruments, contributing to the preservation and transmission of Vietnam’s intangible cultural heritage.
